A study of chlorophyll-like and phycobilin pigments in the C endosymbiont of the apple- snail Pomacea canaliculata Biocell
Vega,Israel A.; Dellagnola,Federico A.; Hurst,Jorge A.; Godoy,Martín S.; Castro-Vazquez,Alfredo.
Pigments present in the brown-greenish C morph of an intracellular endosymbiont of Pomacea canaliculata were investigated. Acetone extracts of the endosymbiotic corpuscles showed an absorption spectrum similar to that of chlorophylls. Three fractions obtained from silica gel column chromatography of the acetone extracts (C I, C II and C III), were studied by positive ion fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry (FAB-MS) and hydrogen-nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR). Results indicated the presence of (1) a sterol in the yellow colored C I fraction; (2) a mixture of pheophorbides a and b in the major green fraction, C II; and (3) a modified pheophorbide a in the smaller green fraction, C III. Aqueous extracts of the C endosymbiont did not show evidence of...

Ribeiro,Márcia Vaz; Deuner,Sidnei; Benitez,Letícia Carvalho; Einhardt,Andersom Milech; Peters,José A.; Braga,Eugenia J. Bolacel.
Salinity is a limiting factor fot growth and development, since it affects several physiological processes in plants. This trial aimed to assess the levels of photosynthetic pigments, betacyanins, lipid peroxidation and activity of antioxidant enzymes in Alternanthera philoxeroides under salt stress. Plants originated from an in vitro culture were acclimatized and irrigated with sodium chloride (0, 200 and 400 mM) for 30 d. The experimental design was completely randomized with a 3×2 factorial arrangement of treatments: three concentrations of NaCl and two plant tissues (stems and leaves). The experimental data was subjected to an analysis of variance and means where compared using Tukey test (p≤0.05). The levels of chlorophylls a, chlorophylls b and total...

Chlorophyll a fluorescence in saccharine sorghum irrigated with saline water AGRIAMBI
Monteiro,Danilo R.; Melo,Hidelblandi F. de; Lins,Cintia M. T.; Dourado,Pablo R. M.; Santos,Hugo R. B.; Souza,Edivan R. de.
ABSTRACT Soil salinity directly affects plants, interfering in the emission of fluorescence, and promoting the degradation of photosynthetic pigments. Thus, estimating the damage to the photosynthetic apparatus caused by saline water is an important tool to detect abiotic stresses. For this purpose, sorghum plants were cultivated in a greenhouse and irrigated with two water sources (NaCl and salt mixture) with six levels of electrical conductivity (EC) (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 dS m-1), forming a 6 × 2 factorial in randomized blocks with four repetitions. At 60 days after sowing, the photosynthetic pigments were quantified, the chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters (initial fluorescence [F0]; variable fluorescence [Fv]; maximum fluorescence [Fm];...

Differences in morphological and physiological leaf characteristics between Tabebuia aurea and T. impetiginosa is related to their typical habitats of occurrence Acta Botanica
Capuzzo,Juliana Pfrimer; Rossatto,Davi Rodrigo; Franco,Augusto César.
The genus Tabebuia is representative of the Cerrado biome, occurring in savanna and forest formations. These vegetation types are associated with distinct environmental conditions in terms of water availability, microclimate and soil properties. We compared morphological and physiological traits between Tabebuia aurea (Silva Manso) Benth. & Hook. f. ex S. Moore, which is typical of the savanna vegetation, and T. impetiginosa (Mart. ex DC.) Standl, which is commonly found in the gallery forests that occur along streams and rivers. Both were sampled in savanna conditions under full sun. The savanna species had higher values of leaf and petiole thickness, specific leaf mass, maximum CO2 assimilation on a leaf area basis, stomatal conductance,...

SH SADAK,Mervat; ABDELHAMID,Magdi T; SCHMIDHALTER,Urs.
Salinity decreases yield in arid and semi-arid areas. With increasing demand for irrigation water, alternative sources are being sought. Seawater salinity was previously considered unusable for irrigation. However, this water can be used successfully to grow crops under certain conditions. Amino acids is well known biostimulant which has positive effects on plant growth and yield, and significantly mitigates the injuries caused by abiotic stresses. Therefore, in the present study, the effect of exogenously treatment amino acid on faba bean plant growing under seawater salt stress was investigated. Reduction of salinity damage in faba bean by using a mixture of amino acids to improve morphological and biochemical parameters, and thus raising the level of...

In vitro culture at low temperature and ex vitro acclimatization of Vriesea inflata an ornamental bromeliad Rev. Bras. Bot.
Pedroso,Andrea Nunes Vaz; Lazarini,Rosmari Aparecida de Morais; Tamaki,Vívian; Nievola,Catarina Carvalho.
(In vitro culture at low temperature and ex vitro acclimatization of Vriesea inflata an ornamental bromeliad). In vitro culture by seeds is a technique for preservation of threatened species because it may provide a large number of plants with genetic diversity. The bromeliad Vriesea inflata (Wawra) Wawra, an ornamental bromeliad, is extensively and illegally collected from the nature and must be preserved. It is possible to form plant threatened collections in vitro by reducing the temperature of culture, while occupying little space, with the consequent reduction of maintenance costs. This work evaluated the influence of temperature on in vitro growth and morphology of plants of V. inflata, with the aim of establishing a slow growth-rate and analyzing...

Influence of light intensity on growth and physiological characteristics of common sage (Salvia officinalis L.) BABT
Zervoudakis,George; Salahas,George; Kaspiris,George; Konstantopoulou,Eleni.
The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of four different light intensities on the growth characteristics, physiological parameters and leaf photosynthetic pigments of Salvia officinalis L. The plant's dry mass, number of the leaves and physiological parameters indicated a strong positive correlation with the light intensity. On the other hand, the plant's height and leaf photosynthetic pigments were increased at low light treated plants. These results suggest that the aromatic herb Salvia officinalis L. is adaptable to different light environments.

Portable chlorophyll meter for the quantification of photosynthetic pigments, nitrogen and the possible use for assessment of the photochemical process in Carica papaya L. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Torres Netto,Alena; Campostrini,Eliemar; Oliveira,Jurandi Gonçalves de; Yamanishi,Osvaldo Kiyoshi.
The techniques utilized to extract chlorophyll from plant materials are destructive and based on methods that use organic solvents. This study proposes the non-destructive quantification of chlorophyll and nitrogen concentration using a portable chlorophyll meter (SPAD-502). Further, was possible to establish relationships between chlorophyll fluorescence and SPAD-502 values. This methodology could save time, space and resources, and could be used for analysis of the photosynthetic processes. Papaya leaves (Solo and Formosa groups) of different ages were collected from 15-month-old plants cultivated in a commercial field in São Francisco de Itabapoana, Rio de Janeiro State (41(0):15W; 21(0):27S). Correlations were established between the chlorophyll...

Short-term interactions between phytoplankton and intertidal seagrass vegetation in a coastal lagoon (Bassin d'Arcachon, SW France) ArchiMer
De Wit, Rutger; Troussellier, Marc; Courties, Claude; Buffan-dubau, Evelyne; Lemaire, Emmanuelle.
We experimentally simulated the temporality of the interactions between intertidal seagrasses and phytoplankton in the context of nutrient enrichment from continental origin. Phytoplankton development was retarded after 1-day exposure to intertidal Zostera noltii Hornemann vegetation samples, with respect to control treatments. This was not explained by resource competition and we hypothesized a direct interference between seagrass leaves and phytoplankton. After separation from the vegetation in 5-day incubations, the final yield of large phytoplankton, mainly diatoms and haptophytes, was determined by nutrient loading. In contrast, Synechococcus-like cells (SYN), phototrophic picoeukaryotes and nanophytoplankton decreased after day 3, most likely due to...

Suivi de quelques facteurs environnementaux dans les pertuis Charentais : de 1992 à 1994 ArchiMer
Arnaud, Christophe.
A study of the environmental factors in the "pertuis charentais" (charentais straits) has been carried out from 1993 tc 1994. The evolution of water temperature and salinity, as weil as the turbidity, are studied. ln the middle of Breton Strait, near to the long lines, the stratification has not been observed, and the salinity variations are much less sharp than in the stations which are located nearer the coast. The photosynthetic pigments concentrations can be very different in the same time at two close stations; in the Antioch Strait and at the long lines, the values of chlorophyll "a" are comparable; they are much higher in the Breton Strait. At the same time, a study has been made on the physical factors, the photosynthetic pigments concentrations,...
